WORDS of LIFE
reflecting on the diverse beauty of language and the art of bible translation
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
In 2014, I met my friends Devin and Charity Schlote in our church small group. Devin studied languages and Charity is an educator, and the two share a passion for mission. In 2016 when I heard that Devin & Charity were in the midst of beginning their training as bible translators for Wycliffe and had been called to work with indigenous languages in Papua New Guinea, I felt that God was answering a prayer for me.
After some time, I approached Charity and asked if I could make a collection of art that would benefit their mission. For months I had been praying for a space to use my work to benefit God's mission in this specific way!
I studied language, diction, and phonetics as an opera student for years, and the changing tapestry and flexibility of language has always fascinated me. For this body of work, I am illuminating scriptures that Devin and Charity have chosen. I am also creating personal responses to research on language, translation, and culture. In addition, I am spending some time studying the culture of Papua New Guinea itself, which is the most linguistically diverse place on earth.
